How the capital distance game works

A question gives you a starting capital and two possible destinations. Choose the destination closer to the starting city. After answering, compare the distances shown for both routes.

  1. Find the starting city, then read both destination names.
  2. Choose the closer destination using the map and what you know about the region.
  3. Check both distances and notice the size of the gap.

Distance around a globe

The game measures the shortest surface distance around a spherical Earth from one capital’s coordinates to another’s. These are often called great-circle distances. They are not road distances, scheduled flight routes or journey times.

On many flat world maps, a shortest route can look curved. Cities near opposite edges of a map can also be close across the date line. It helps to imagine the map wrapping around a globe rather than stopping at the edge.

A useful way to estimate

First place the cities in their continents and regions. A nearby country is a useful starting clue, but borders alone do not determine the answer: a capital may sit far from the part of its country you are thinking about.

Latitude matters too. Lines of longitude converge toward the poles, so the same change in longitude does not represent the same distance at every latitude. Let the revealed distances correct your mental map after each question.
